Do you need health insurance?

Quick Facts
What is it?
The Maryland Health Insurance Plan (MHIP) is a state-sponsored health insurance program for individuals who are uninsured or under-insured and need help accessing quality health care. There are two plans based on income:
  • The Maryland Health Insurance Plan provides health insurance to certain individuals who do not have access to health care. MHIP connects individuals who are hard to insure due to certain health reasons.

  • The Maryland Health Insurance Plan+ is a discounted health insurance plan for individuals with moderate to low household incomes. MHIP+ reduces the cost of premiums and expenses but provides the same coverage as MHIP.
What do I get?
Health services include: medical care and equipment, prescription drugs and mental health services.

When you enroll in MHIP, you must choose between one of four health care benefit plans. The deductible you may pay differs for each of the four plans.

For more information on each plan, please refer to the MHIP website.

How long do I get it?
You must reapply every year for the MHIP+ discounted plan.
