Renters' Tax Credit

Do you want to get cash back for the rent you paid? Learn how you can receive property tax credits from your rental payments.

Quick Facts
What is it?
The Renters' Tax Credit Program provides qualified renters with a property tax credit similar to that of someone who owns a home. The program is based upon the idea that a percent of how much rent you pay to your landlord goes to yearly property taxes for the home. If your rent exceeds a certain proportion of your income then you can qualify for the credit.

What do I get?
If the renter and the dwelling meet specific conditions a payment of up to $750 may be received. The credit is paid as a direct check from the State of Maryland.

How long do I get it?
Renters who qualify must apply by September 1st of each year to receive the Renters' Tax Credit. The payment is once a year.

Look Out
The applicant must be a lease holder for the property and be legally responsible for the rent. If the dwelling that is rented is owned by a tax exempt, charitable organization or is exempt in any way from property taxation, a tax credit cannot be granted.
